A bookplate is a label identifying the owner of a book. It is usually pasted or tipped to the inside front cover and at its simplest indicates the owner's name. It is common for the expression "ex libris" to be included.
With examples dating back to 1516, bookplates have also become highly collectable miniature artworks ranging from heraldic varieties that display family crests, to engravings, etchings, wood and linocuts and other printed forms that hint at the passions and interests of the book's owner.
Since the 19th Century collectors have formed societies, produced journals and publications, and actually commissioned many bookplates for their own sake in order to exchange them with other collectors. Many of the world's leading artists have designed bookplates and the bookplate boutique offers a range of bookplates designed to suit almost any collector.
